Question: What is IELTS?

Answer: The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of two recognized English language proficiency tests and the most popular in the world. It is designed to demonstrate the English proficiency of newcomers and is one of the most widely accepted language tests for newcomers to Canada. Thousands of people come to Canada every year to take the IELTS test.

There are two forms of testing available:

General Training Test: This test is necessary for express entry to Canada and other immigration needs, as determined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It tests everyday language skills to help determine whether someone can communicate and work effectively in an English-speaking country.

Academic Test: This test is designed to demonstrate the English proficiency of students wishing to pursue post-secondary education in Canada. Academic tests determine whether a person can successfully study at an English-speaking university, and college admissions may be conditional on achieving a high score.
